Innovator, leader, advocate, and philanthropist are words that can be used to describe Betsy DeVos, the current United States Secretary of Education. She is known for her bravery in fighting for reforms in leadership and governance in politics and education in the country. She has always desired to see other people prosper, which is why she fights for better environments for everyone. She is a graduate of Calvin College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business economics.
While still at Calvin College, Betsy was active in the institute’s politics. She continued her interest in the area after her departure, joining the Michigan Republic Party in 1982. Four years later, she was elected the party’s local precinct delegate. Since then, she has been active in the party, holding several leadership posts, including the National Committeewoman for Michigan. She was also the chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party between the year 1996 and 2000 and was re-elected in 2003. She also served as the finance chairperson for the National Republican Senatorial Committee during the reign of President George W. Bush.
Throughout her active political life, Betsy has been at the forefront of funding campaigns for the Republican Party. Her family has given about 17 million dollars to the party’s candidates for almost three decades now. Besides winning elections, Betsy hopes that her funding goes towards creating and promoting policies that can lead to an honest government that respects the American virtues. Her fundraising skills are profound; she is known to have raised over 150000 dollars for the re-election campaign of President Bush.
Betsy DeVos is well-known for her relentless efforts in advocating for a good education system in the country. She believes that each child regardless of his or her background is entitled to quality education. Her efforts are concentrated in fighting for charter schools and financial aids to unprivileged children, to enable them to join private schools. To this length, she strongly fights for public funding for these children through school vouchers. She has been affiliated with several organizations that align with her beliefs including the Alliance for School Choice, All Children matter, the American Education Reform Council, the Advocates for School Choice, Great Lakes Education Project and the Education Freedom Fund. She has donated about 18 million to various public, charter and Christian schools.
Besides education, Betsy has interests in other areas such as healthcare, arts, leadership, and justice that she funds together with her husband Dick DeVos under the Dick & Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. Her donations have gone to various institutions and organizations such as the Acton Institute, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Center for Individual Rights and ArtPrize. Her giving goes beyond monetary to advisory and leadership services to organizations such as Neurocore.
